Favorite Bicycling Hill Climbs

Currently under construction.

Next Climbing hills on my road bike is one of my favorite physical activities because I get to go so fast coming back down!    I've written this page to share some my favorite hill climbs for bicycling. (Yes, I did take the aerial photos myself.)

Whitney Portal Road

Whitney Portal Road, looking west from above Lone Pine

[Rider climbing Whitney Portal Road] I've been riding Whitney Protal Road at least once a year since '88; it's become like an old friend. Mount Whitney (see A in above photo) is the highest point in the contiguous US at 14,500 ft. Whitney Portal Road climbs 13 miles from Highway 395 in Lone Pine, el. 3700 ft., to Whitney Portal, el. 8400 ft. In the photo to the right, my friend Paul is climbing WPR while we were on a side-trip of the L.A. to Mono Lake Bike-a-thon. The photo was taken on segment B in the above photo looking east over Owen's Valley just north of Lone Pine. Segment C is the steepest part of the road and is the place where I hit my all time max speed of 60 mph on a descent in '96. This hill climb is also part of the Death Valley - Whitney Portal Race.

Two views of Horseshoe Medows Road. Looking NW along the Eastern Slope of the Sierras and West at the Eastern Face from south of Lone Pine.

Horseshoe Medows Road is the most grueling hill climb I've ever done!
